An Historical Event As A Subject:
Form Communicating Content and Meaning
Graphic Design is a form of visual communication that often requires the graphic artist to create graphic media that are composed of shapes, letters, and words. The intent of this graphic piece is to develop an understanding of the inventive potential of typographic form. As a message carrier, typography can intensify and expand content and meaning.
Design Process
· Research at least five historical events, and list them in your sketchbook
· Choose one of the events and write a short passage that includes the following:
1. Person’s name involved with event
2. Historical event name
3. Dates of historical event
4. Time of historical event
5. Significance of historical event
Examples
“The world’s deepest submarine dive, November 17, 1973, 32,820 ft”
“Christian Barnard First Successful Heart Transplant 12/3/67”
“Amelia Earhart, July 2, 1937 Disappeared in flight over the Atlantic Ocean”
“San Francisco, April 18, 1906 5:12am great earthquake and fire”
Requirements
Sketches – Create ten 3” high by 2” wide sketches in sketchbook
One rough – Create one 11x8.5” Hand-rendered rough with black pen
Post final comprehensive, ten sketches and one rough on your blog!
· Write an essay that specifically describes how each of the concepts listed below have been implemented in the design, and how your design specifically conveys the historical message through the form and placement of the type. Include your name, title of graphic piece, and date.
· Composition Through the “Rule of Thirds”
· Focal-point and Hierarchy
· Movement and Rhythm
· Balance and Symmetry
· Proximity and Visual Weight
· Typographical Message
